The earliest known examples of Gujarati literature are the works of the poet Narsinh Mehta, who wrote devotional poetry in the 15th century. Gujarati has a rich literary tradition dating back to the 12th century. It is native to the Indian state of Gujarat, where it is the chief language, neighbouring states such as Maharashtra and Rajasthan, and to the adjacent union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It is derived from a language called Old Gujarati (1100–1500 AD) which is the ancestor language of the modern Gujarati and Rajasthani languages. Gujarati (ગુજરાતી Gujarātī) is an Indo-Aryan language, and part of the greater Indo-European language family. It is recognised as an accurate and authentic language resource by scholars and experts and can also be downloaded as software and apps for multiple devices for online and offline use.
